Niacinamide, Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid: How to Layer Them
Share
Three hero ingredients, one routine
Vitamin C, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid are three of the most popular ingredients in skincare — and one of the most common questions is whether you can use them together. The short answer: yes. They work through different mechanisms and actually complement each other beautifully when layered correctly.
Let's break down what each one does, then how to stack them.
What each ingredient does
- Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps brighten the look of dull, uneven skin and defends against daily environmental stress like pollution and UV. It's most at home in your morning routine.
- Niacinamide (vitamin B3) helps strengthen and support the skin barrier, balance the look of oil, refine the appearance of pores and even out tone. It's remarkably easy-going and plays well with almost everything.
- Hyaluronic acid is a hydration powerhouse. It draws water into the skin to plump and soften, making it feel comfortable and look dewy.
Busting the old myth
You may have read that vitamin C and niacinamide "cancel each other out." This traces back to 1960s research in which pure niacin (nicotinic acid) and pure ascorbic acid were held at temperatures above 70°C for extended periods — nothing like the conditions on your face, where skin sits at around 32–35°C. A 2014 review by Wohlrab and Kreft noted that the reaction pathway is thermodynamically unfavourable at skin-surface temperature (about 32°C). In other words, that isn't how modern, stabilised formulas behave in real life. Dermatologists today confirm you can use vitamin C and niacinamide together safely and effectively.
The simple layering order
Following the thin-to-thick rule:
- Cleanse and pat your skin so it's still slightly damp.
- Vitamin C serum first, on clean skin — it's most effective applied before heavier layers. Give it a minute or two to absorb.
- Niacinamide next. (Many products now combine niacinamide and hyaluronic acid in one step, which makes this even easier.)
- Hyaluronic acid on slightly damp skin, so it has water to grab onto.
- Moisturiser to seal in all that goodness.
- Sunscreen as your final morning step.
Easy ways to fit them into your day
You don't have to use all three at every step. A popular approach:
- Morning: Vitamin C → hyaluronic acid → moisturiser → SPF (vitamin C loves the daytime for its antioxidant protection).
- Evening: Niacinamide and/or hyaluronic acid → moisturiser.
A few gentle tips
- Wait 1–2 minutes between layers so each has time to absorb.
- If your skin is sensitive, start vitamin C a couple of times a week and build up.
- Avoid piling on too many other strong actives at the same time — these three are friendly, but more isn't always better.
- Finish with SPF every morning. It protects everything you just applied.
Get the sequence right and you've got a simple, well-rounded routine that supports hydration, brightness and a healthy-looking barrier all at once.
