How to Build a Simple Skincare Routine

You don't need 10 steps — you need the right ones
If skincare feels overwhelming, here's the good news: dermatologists broadly agree that consistency beats complexity. You don't need a 10-step routine or a shelf full of products. A gentle cleanser, a good moisturiser and daily sun protection will take you most of the way. Everything else is a bonus you add slowly, once your skin is happy.
Think of your routine in two moods. In the morning, you're protecting your skin for the day ahead. At night, you're cleansing away the day and giving your skin space to recover while you sleep.
The golden rule: thin to thick
The single most useful principle in skincare is to apply products from the thinnest, most watery texture to the thickest, creamiest one. Lightweight formulas absorb quickly and let the next layer sink in; a rich cream applied first creates a barrier that thinner products can't get through. Sunscreen always comes last in the morning.
Give each layer 30 to 60 seconds to absorb before the next. It's a small pause that makes a real difference.
Your morning routine (about 5 minutes)
- Cleanser. A gentle wash removes the oil and sweat that build up overnight and preps your skin to absorb what comes next.
- Serum (optional). A lightweight antioxidant serum, such as vitamin C, is a lovely morning step to help defend against daily environmental stress.
- Moisturiser. This hydrates and seals everything in. Even oily skin needs it.
- Sunscreen (SPF 30+). The non-negotiable final step. In fact, daily sunscreen is one of the best-evidenced anti-ageing habits there is: in a landmark randomized trial (Hughes and colleagues, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in 2013, following 903 adults over 4.5 years), the group using sunscreen daily showed 24% less skin ageing than the group using it at their own discretion.
Your evening routine
- Cleanse. Remove makeup, sunscreen and the day's grime. If you wear long-wear makeup or SPF, a gentle double cleanse works beautifully.
- Treatment (optional). This is where actives like retinol or exfoliating acids belong — at night, a few times a week, never all at once.
- Serum. A hydrating serum such as hyaluronic acid or a soothing niacinamide is ideal here.
- Moisturiser or night cream. A slightly richer cream overnight helps support your skin barrier while you rest.
Start slow and listen to your skin
Add one new active at a time and give it two to four weeks before introducing another. If something stings, tightens or breaks you out, scale back. A natural, barrier-friendly moisturiser and a gentle cleanser make the perfect foundation to build on — look for nourishing plant oils and calming botanicals rather than long lists of harsh ingredients.
Keep it simple, keep it consistent, and your skin will thank you.
