A Simple Body Care Routine for Dry Skin

A Simple Body Care Routine for Dry Skin

Don't forget everything below your jawline

We lavish attention on our faces and then forget the rest. But the skin on your body needs care too — especially if it feels dry, tight, rough or flaky. Dry body skin happens when the skin loses water too quickly or lacks enough natural oils, and it's often made worse by cold weather, dry indoor air, hot showers and harsh soaps. The fix is mostly about how you cleanse and moisturise.

Shower smart

Long, hot showers feel wonderful but they strip the skin's natural oil barrier — the very thing that keeps moisture in.

  • Keep showers warm, not hot, and limit them to around 5–10 minutes.
  • Use a gentle, fragrance-conscious cleanser rather than a harsh, stripping soap. A creamy body wash or shower oil is ideal for dry skin.
  • Pat dry gently with a towel — don't rub.

Moisturise at the magic moment

The single most important habit for dry skin: moisturise while your skin is still slightly damp, within a few minutes of stepping out of the shower. This traps existing moisture against the skin and locks it in.

  • For dry skin, creams and ointments work better than thin lotions.
  • Look for humectants (like glycerin and hyaluronic acid) that draw in water, emollients (like shea or cocoa butter and plant oils) that soften, and barrier-supporting ingredients like ceramides.
  • Reapply to hands and any rough areas — elbows, knees, heels — throughout the day.

Exfoliate gently (and not too often)

A little gentle exfoliation can smooth rough patches on knees and elbows and help your moisturiser absorb better. But go easy — over-scrubbing damages the barrier and makes dryness worse. Once or twice a week is plenty, using small circular motions, always followed by moisturiser.

Don't skip body SPF

Any skin that sees daylight benefits from sun protection. Unprotected UV worsens dryness and contributes to visible ageing, so extend SPF to exposed areas like your hands, chest and arms.

Little habits that help

  • Swap harsh, heavily fragranced soaps for gentle formulas.
  • Protect skin from cold wind with clothing in winter.
  • Consider a humidifier if your indoor air is very dry.
  • Choose richer body butters or oils in winter and lighter textures in summer.

A nourishing body cream or body oil with natural butters and plant oils turns this simple routine into something that feels genuinely good — soft, comfortable skin from the neck down, with just a few mindful minutes a day.
